Futon Mattresses: Then and Now
When futons first appeared in the U.S., futon mattresses were usually made of all cotton. Present day manufacturers typically use some combination of cotton and foam to create a futon mattress that meets a firmness code. Generally, the firmer the mattress, the more foam content. Additionally, many futon mattresses are now being made to be plusher and softer to the touch. These are made to be premium mattresses. The plusher, premium futon mattresses are for the mainstream customer who is used to the conventional mattress seen in most brick and mortar stores.

Composition and Firmness
