Mattresses respond to weight based upon their composition. Consumers have their own opinions about what a mattress should be for them. Some like very firm mattresses others soft or medium firmness. Futon mattresses are versatile because they can take some bending to accommodate the seating position of the futon frame but have varying levels of firmness to accommodate each futon owner's desires.

A minimum of six inch thickness is required for comfort. Six inches will provide adequate cushioning between the futon user and the futon frame. Thicker mattresses are heavier so add a little bit of weight for the functioning of the futon from sleeper to seating position.

Years ago futon mattresses were 100% cotton. Today it is more common to find a cotton/foam combination used in most homes. Futon mattresses are now available in a more plush, premium mattress foundation as well. The configuration of the premium mattresses more closely resembles traditional mattresses that consumers are used to.
